In reply to Cece. Because that was what the BBC Commissioned. Each episode is 90 mins long... It's like being given 3 films. The original pilot was 60 mins long which makes me assume Moffat and Gatiss where thinking they would have more episodes with a smaller running time. *This is not a definitive answer*
