MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 3, episode 19 preview: Jenna, Matty, and prom paranoia

The first thing worth noting about Tuesday night’s “Awkward” season 3 episode is that like one a few weeks ago that brought forward Jenna’s comeback from her super-depressed / emo phase, this one is also going to be a one-hour special. What’s still mostly unusual about this is that MTV is willing to throw an episode on at 11:00 p.m. Eastern time, hoping that viewers are still interested in checking it out. Then again, they obviously know already that they would rather have episodes up in early December than at Christmastime, just in order to avoid having to compete with people starting their Christmas vacations. This is one way to do that.

But questions about the airdate aside, one of the reasons why this particular episode coming up could be so compelling is mostly because of the opportunity it presents for Jenna and Matty to really get their relationship back on track. Specifically here, we’re talking about an event that is an institution at many high schools all across the country: Prom. Jenna wants to go, and she obviously wants Matty to take her. The only thing that we have to think about here is whether or not he will actually ask.

For Matty, we see this being a tricky dilemma. There’s little doubt in our mind that he wants to ask Jenna to be his date for the big event, but there could be one thing that is slightly holding him back right now: Fear. Clearly, he doesn’t want to get his heart broken again, and all he has to go on so far is experience.
