‘Downton Abbey’ season 4, episode 6 spoilers: Joanne Froggatt, Brendan Coyle’s confrontation

The latest -Are Anna and Bates really going to be able to move forward following some of their recent woes on Sunday’s “Downton Abbey” episode? The last we saw them on the show, they were (spoiler alert for Americans!) getting at least the truth out there about the fact that Anna was raped during the party, while the opera singer Dame Nelly Melba was performing. However, there was still a lie carefully enclosed in there, as well: Whether or not Bates actually knows the identity of the rapist.

Out of fear that Bates will murder Mr. Green and be locked away forever, Anna is staying silent about the identity of the guilty party, and she hoped for a time that Bates would just drop it and want to move forward. Unfortunately, she is realizing now that this is not exactly the case. The photo above is from what would appear on the surface to be a romantic dinner that Joanne Froggatt and Brendan Coyle’s characters are going to share Sunday, but this will turn not-so-romantic quickly as Bates makes it clear that he is still going to track down the man who did such a terrible thing to his wife.

At the moment, it is really hard to see a happy ending to this story. While Green deserves to be brought to justice, Bates killing him would only further some of the fears and suspicions that we’ve had about him as a character over the past two years. In addition to that, it also makes that romance with Anna completely and utterly on the rocks forever, since they cannot be together. What has to be done here is for there to be some sort of middle ground, whether it be a way for Green to confess himself to the authorities, or for Bates to realize that there are other ways that the guilty can suffer without him joining in the suffering behind bars.

This is just one of many stories that is going to play out during an eventful episode, which also will feature a despondent Lady Edith, and a plan for Robert’s birthday party that wastes little time at all in going awry.
