ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3, episode 1 preview: Olivia Pope vs. her father

On tomorrow’s “Scandal” season 3 premiere, the drama is going to be hard-hitting almost from the very beginning. While the episode may be entitled “It’s Handled,” it is definitely not going to be in a variety of different ways.

For one, Olivia Pope is going to be forced to make a major decision almost straight from the get-go: How close does she really want to be to the government right now? The word is out there about her affair with Fitz, and the more that she tries to get closer to him, the worse off she is going to look in the public eye. Her father seems to at least be aware of what this sort of office can do to her, and thus, he tries his hardest to give her a warning on the subject. Unfortunately, it’s not entirely clear just how willing she is to listen. She tells him explicitly that her mother warned her to stay away from him much in the same way that he warns her to stay away from the government. A sign of tough times to come? Without a doubt.

This has been a reveal that creator Shonda Rhimes has been really planning for this show since the very beginning, so to see the end results of it finally play out now are extra rewarding. Early on, though, we do not know how much time Olivia is going to even have to deal with her dad thanks to everything else that is piling up (metaphorically, of course) on her desk.
