NBC must seem very cruel right now to some diehard fans of “Law & Order: SVU.” Based on the first promo that has been released for the drama’s September 25 return, there are going to be some pretty terrible circumstances that Olivia Benson is going to be going through.
The 21 seconds below are really a tale of two groups. On one side of the coin, you have the hunt for William “Burnt Fingertips” Lewis, and given the skill that is on this team, you have to assume that they will be successful eventually. However, on the other side you have Mariska Hargitay’s character going through an emotional wringer. This is going to be a very difficult series of scenes to watch, just as we’re even more sure this is going to be a difficult series of scenes for Hargitay to film. Basically, she’s having to put herself in the position of some of the women that she and the team have saved over the years.
Eventually, the show will move past Lewis and what transpired during that devastating finale last year, and then shift back to some individual cases. But what impact will this have on Benson in the long-term? This is what we are personally interested to see, as there is definitely a large capacity for change here … especially a decade and a half into the game. This isn’t like Benson has only been at this for a short amount of time.
We know already that one of the more controversial cases this season is going to be inspired by the death of Trayvon Martin and the Paula Deen controversy, and if the show is going to go this “ripped from the headlines” direction, we hope that they simultaneously try to deal with some great character stories to balance it out.
