‘Royal Pains’ season 5, episode 5 review: A missing Jeremiah and a forgettable hour

Royal PainsAfter a few weeks now of particularly strong episodes, we have to say that this Wednesday, “Royal Pains” fell to earth with a thud. This was an episode that felt straight out of season 1, when we thought that the show was still trying to find its way, and there was barely anything that happened in it at all save for trying to give Blythe Ballard a little more humanity to make Evan’s chase for village council almost pointless in some ways.

One thing that really upset us tonight was not seeing any Jeremiah at all, since we were seeing he and Divya grow closer, and them working together was starting to give us hope for a hook-up at some point. But alas, she spent all of her time working with a conductor in a storyline that was a complete one-off.

At least Hank had a little bit of a more interesting story in that it brought us the return of the police officer and his prone-to-be-arrested daughter, and it looks like these two could still be a frequent presence in the future, as they have to learn to communicate a little bit better in the future. One notable moment that you cannot forget? Hank lying about whether or not he was still on medication. This is going to be a problem as we get ever closer to the end of the summer, since this addiction could eventually rear its ugly head.

All in all, we still enjoyed the surprisingly-short hour, but it was not up to recent standards; however, it felt largely like a throwaway that showed Evan getting signatures, and really just needed to be there to fill the episode count.
