‘Hell on Wheels’ season 3 production halted thanks to Alberta flooding

Hell on WheelsFor the cast and crew of “Hell on Wheels,” they were getting close to experiencing hell on earth courtesy of some terrible storms and mass flooding rolling into the show’s location in the Calgary, Alberta area. While we are pleased to report that everyone affiliated with the show is fine, there will be changes coming when it comes to the series’ premiere date on AMC later this year.

Originally scheduled to air on Saturday, August 3, the new season will now start on August 10 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time with a two-hour premiere. It is not a guarantee that the date change and the flooding are related, since it means that the show will not really be pushing back post-production for any episode save for the first one. However, the timing of the change is pretty suspicious.

According to Deadline, the series was in the process of filming its sixth episode of the season when the decision came down to shut down production for a temporary hiatus. Work should begin again as planned next week, pending some unforeseen circumstance when it comes to the flooding.

This has already been a complicated off-season for the show, which to begin with is almost the forgotten child of the network lineup. The move to Saturdays for the show is a risky one, but the network is hoping to incorporate it with other Western-themed movies. There’s not much competition on the night with scripted programming, so if there is a way that “Hell on Wheels” can break through, this could be a major risk worth taking.
