‘Bones’ season 9 spoilers: What’s next for Sweets post-Pelant?

On the season 8 finale of “Bones” Monday night, one of the bigger surprises was that Sweets ended up having a part to play in just about everything. He feels a tremendous amount of guilt in Pelant getting the power that he did, and he also has to deal with the fact that Booth really had to save his life in the closing minutes.

So where does Sweets go from here? One of the things that makes “Bones” interesting right now is that thanks to the fact that some of their episodes for this season were the “bonus” ones filmed last year, the show is actually shooting some season 9 installments now. With that in mind, we have some scoop on what is coming up for this character courtesy of executive producer Stephen Nathan. Here is what he had to say in a chat with TVLine:

“He has some leave coming from the FBI, and considering all the stress and guilt he feels after Pelant’s [latest killing spree], he decides to take his leave and explore another opportunity … We’re going to see in Sweets that crime-fighting isn’t the only thing he’s focused on. We’re going to open up his life a little more.”

To us, this is a welcome opportunity, if for no other reason than that we’ve really started to really love Sweets character over the past several seasons. This time around, much of the plot was comedic courtesy of him living with Booth and Brennan for a time, and this allowed for an opportunity to show the type of person he really is away from work.
