‘American Horror Story’: Season 3 theories on setting, characters

Jessica LangeWe know that there are some people excited to see how “American Horror Story: Asylum” is going to come to a close on Wednesday, isn’t it interesting that there are just as many transfixed on finding all of the clues to season hidden? Executive producer Ryan Murphy has said on a number of occasions that there are clues hidden within the show’s final episodes, and thus there are already theories forming everywhere from major publications to tiny blogs.

So let’s start things off here by explaining a little bit about what is for sure going to be coming up in the new season. For one, we will officially be seeing Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, and Sarah Paulson all back for more later this year, though the only thing we know about the characters at the moment is that Lange will be playing someone who is much more glamorous than a nun at an insane asylum.

In addition, the setting is no longer going to be decades in the past; Ryan Murphy told reporters this past week that they were going with something a bit more modern, which cancels out the theory that the song “I Put a Spell on You” played on the jukebox earlier this season was actually a hint about the Salem witch trials.  Murphy added that most of the actors are going to again play very different roles next year, and the “Bloody Face” sort of villain will be a woman.

As of right now, here are some of the popular theories floating around on the internet.

Prison – Sister Jude’s patient number to some has felt like something that felt out of place on the show … but is a prison really all that different than an asylum? We don’t buy this theory much at all.

School – The See Spot Run book and “The Name Game” both could serve as evidence of this, but at the same time we really can’t see Murphy going anywhere near this so soon after the Newtown tragedy.

Carnival – Some of the quotes surrounding Pepper have yielded suggestions that we could be seeing some sort of circus sideshow, and can we be the first to say that we would love this? This is not the sort of thing that we have seen since “Carnivale,” and the potential for real-world creepiness is high here.

New Orleans – This, at the moment, is the most-popular theory from what we’ve seen. There can be witchcraft, voodoo, ghosts, and plenty of other cool stuff in Louisiana. It’s also something that is not oversaturated at the moment, and everything from the jukebox to music and other tiny hints suggest that this deserves to be the leading candidate.
