‘American Idol’ notes: Haley Reinhart, Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez
It’s “American Idol” album season! Thanks to the release of Phillip Phillips’ “The World from the Side of the Moon,” we have some cool news coming up a little later on in this article … but for now, we are kicking things off courtesy of some potentially-sad details breaking from season 10 star (and personal favorite) Haley Reinhart.
Is it over? – According to the Los Angeles Times, Haley has parted ways with both 19 Recordings and Interscope Records after just one album in “Listen Up!”, which was released in May. The disc failed to move many copies despite Haley’s presence from the show, even if it did receive mostly positive reviews from music critics.
Really, the question that is easy to ask here is “what went wrong,” but the only clear answer here might be “nothing at all.” Haley had decent promotion for a third-place star, as she had live performances mixed in with even an acting spot on “90210.” Her lead single in “Free” was also a pretty good song, even though “Oh My!” with a tweak or two may have been a more commercial choice. The reality here is that Haley is more of a blues / jazz artists than a pop star, and it was always going to be hard for her to be commercially viable in that world. This is one of the few occasions where it may be better off for her to find an indie label that allows her to create more of the sort of music that suits her voice, and she could be very successful in that world for years to come. Just our two cents here.
New Phillip album details – For those curious about sales, HITS Daily Double is currently projecting that “The World from the Side of the Moon” will sell somewhere between 140,000 and 160,000 albums in its first week, which is not bad at all considering the state of the music industry. While these numbers are down compared to Scotty McCreery’s “Clear As Day,” they do mark an increase on both Lee DeWyze’s “Live It Up” and Kris Allen’s self-titled debut. As a matter of fact, Phillip sold more than they did combined in his first week.
You can watch Phillip perform “Home” on “The Late Show with David Letterman” below; just be sure to stick around for the end, when Letterman hilariously calls “American Idol” a “dung heap” while the singer breaks out in laughter.
Jessica Sanchez update – For those of you curious about the reigning runner-up’s upcoming release early next year, know this: it’s getting close to completion! Jessica wrote recently on Twitter that she was listening to the album from her car, It’s not much of a scoop, but it is a reminder that the disc is coming.

I’ll never understand how someone can derive pleasure out of another person’s misfortune. That’s just mean. But I guess that’s the nature of the American Idol beast. It may get these kids a few dedicated fans but it also gets them some relentless haters. SMH

im happy to hear Haley’s career is going no where. i personally think she can not sing, and she thinks shes hot stuf, which clearly, she isnt. she should have never went that far in AI.

She’s not going to be singing on Ellen, or any other talk shows for that matter. Interscope dumped her so there will be no more promotion for Listen Up! It’s unfortunate because they didn’t really seem to give Haley or Listen Up! much of a chance. I mean geez it’s only been six months. Haley has a real tough road ahead of her now if she wants to succeed in music. Not only does she have the ‘American Idol’ stigma but she also now has the ‘dumped by a major label’ stigma.

Haley isn’t touring with Allen Stone, she only filled in for his regular opening act on 2 dates. So maybe the rest of that LA Times story is also false *fingers crossed*. I hate the thought of no second single from Listen Up! And I hate the thought of no second album from Interscope. I’m so gutted by this, I need to go drown my sorrows and listen to Undone on repeat for the rest of the night *sigh*

This news about Haley really upsets me, I have been following her since Idol, bought her album Listen Up!, and this disappoints me because I don’t want her to stop releasing music. At this point we don’t know who instigated the split, but I won’t say that Interscope dropped the ball with her the whole way through, cause Haley’s gotten some pretty cool gigs (Lollapalooza, Carnegie Hall, Muhammad Ali gala, Allen Stone tour)…and her album has sold at least 50K, that’s not bad for a new artist that has not had a hit single….gah, I’m depressed :/

I really like Haley, and considering pro reviews on Listen Up!, which were reasonable, I see a couple of issues. Firstly, she is an offspring of ‘American Idol” and she is not a country artist. If your pooling a fanbase from AI, post 2005 there isnt much too pool from if your not in the country genre. So interscope had a responsibility to do some magical marketing which I dont think they did at all. Did Haley do HER part? She holds 220K Twitter followers 18 months and 6 monthes post release. Jessica Sanchez is climbing up just under1 Million. her album is due Q1 2013. Something went astray with Haley’s marketing niche.

Ugh, that stinks about Haley, she was my fave from her season and I was hopeful she would do a lot better than she has. I have a love/hate relationship with Interscope right now… I love that they let Haley follow her heart and create Listen Up! which is a fantastic album but I hate that they gave up on it so quickly. I’m shocked that they dropped Haley without releasing Oh My! or Undone as a second single… either one of those songs would have done really well I believe. But I guess now we’ll never know. I wish Haley all the best.

That Number for Phillip is what the Record Label projects that his album will sell in the first week but i think he will sell more
