Saturday Night Live creates Days of Our Impeachment parody

SNL

Tonight’s edition of Saturday Night Live was hosted by Harry Styles, but for the cold open, it was about … Days of Our Lives? There were a lot of surprises in the show’s Days of Our Impeachment spoof, but the best moment came from the get-go with Jon Hamm. The former Mad Man star made a bold appearance as Bill Taylor, and with that, he took advantage of the opportunity to have a little bit of a spotlight on him.

The entire spoof was constructed as a way to make the impeachment hearings “flashier” — after all, there were so many criticisms that the hearings were too “boring” from the Republican Party. This sketch was pretty much a response to that.

The good thing about this sketch was that there were a lot of excellent little references in here to a classic soap opera, including amnesia, characters saying “not so fast,” and dramatic music. You also had some random cameos, including getting to see Kenan Thompson turn as Cleveland Browns player Myles Garret, who hit Rudy Giuliani with a helmet. (This was totally random, and it almost just felt like the best thing that the show could do was just find a way to throw as many different pop-culture references in here as humanly possible.)

If there is one problem with the cold open, it’s that there were so many notes that have been done before. How many times, for example, do we really need to get an appearance from Giuliani on the show? Kate McKinnon is brilliant, but it feels like we’ve seen so much of this stuff already.

The irony is that Days of Our Lives made headlines this week over the cast being let out of their contracts — we still have to wait to see what the future holds.
