The Flash season 5 spoilers: Show boss on Eobard Thawne’s role

Reverse Flash -

What lies ahead when The Flash season 5 returns with new episodes Tuesday night? There are a number of important stories, but it’s clear that the Eobard Thawne one is key to almost everything that transpires moving forward. He is at the center of Nora West-Allen making the choice that she did to go back in time and beyond that, he’s clearly established a relationship with her that could prove dangerous. She’s had some element of trust in him, not knowing that he is responsible for what happened with her grandmother’s death.

So now that this particular secret is out in the open, it doesn’t appear as though the writers are going to shy away from giving us more of it in the slightest. Speaking via TVLine, executive producer Todd Helbing describes the dynamic that you’ll see from Eobard and Nora, coupled with just how much more you will see from him:

I would say that Thawne is her “coach”. We get into it a lot more in [the winter premiere], we explain what’s going on, and as the season progresses, she goes back to the future quite a bit. You’ll see a lot more of Thawne.

Helbing also made it clear that the big reason why it was chosen for Tom Cavanagh to be this version of Thawne and not Matt Letscher (who also plays the character) is to play on the season’s theme of legacy. That’s something that you have with Nora and Barry, and given that both people are connected to this villain, it makes more sense for it to be the same one. While Barry has interacted with the Letscher version of the Reverse-Flash before, at this point we would say that this iteration of him is a little more iconic with Legends of Tomorrow.

What we’re personally wondering at the moment is if this entire storyline is being set up so that, somehow, the Reverse-Flash emerges as a Big Bad once more down the road. It’s an intriguing concept, but it’s also hard to really piece that together given just how confusing the character’s timeline and apparent demise is at the moment. If the writers are going to go in that direction, they need to have a pretty good reason for it and one that they can flesh out in an interesting manner.

No matter what the writers decide for this character, we’re just eager to finally see it play out!
