If you remember, at the end of Friday night’s new episode we learned that a snag was going to keep Reddington from getting out of prison — in particular, think of the gun he had in his possession, one that was scrubbed of a serial number. His argument was that it was taken from him in an unlawful search and basically that this one piece of evidence could be the key to him getting out. The fact that you’re going to see the other side of this issue on this February 1st episode cements further that Friday’s new episode is not going to be about James Spader’s character back in a courtroom.

Below, CarterMatt has the official The Blacklist season 5 episode 5 synopsis for you with some more insight on what you can expect:

02/01/2019 (09:00PM – 10:00PM) (Friday) : While Red (James Spader) argues in court to uphold the validity of his immunity agreement, Liz (Megan Boone) and the Task Force question a man whose recent inheritance seems too good to be true and Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) offers Red some advice. Ken Leung, Becky Ann Baker and Terrence Mann guest star.

The fact that Leung is returning basically confirms that we’re going to be revisiting a similar courtroom to what we saw last time, and it’s not going to be easy for Reddington to get out of this situation — we’ve learned that he is fairly formidable as far as a prosecutor goes and while Reddington may be smart, he is also in a situation that even the toughest lawyer would struggle with.

The part of this synopsis we’re actually the most curious is the part involving Dembe — what sort of advice could he really have for Reddington? Is there an actual way in which he could actually help him get out of prison? We also do wonder if the story of “The Pharmacist” comes into play here, given that it seems like Reddington does need Stark to be doing some of his cure research for a specific reason … whether it be for him or someone else important to him.
