The eighth-season premiere of “Supernatural” on October 3 is slowly creeping up, and we’re also getting an opportunity over time to find out more and more in terms of what we should expect from the upcoming collection of episodes. One thing that seems to be a given at the moment? That we are going to see plenty of looks at purgatory — and yes, many of them are going to involve the greatness that is Misha Collins.
Speaking to TVLine, new showrunner Jeremy Carver claims that within some long flashbacks into this realm, we will have plenty of opportunities to see Castiel interact with Jensen Ackles’ Dean:
“That is something that we explore heavily throughout the season through some pretty extensive flashbacks into purgatory … People are always referring to purgatory as hell, and purgatory is not hell. Purgatory is a really brutal, free-wheeling place, but it has different effects on different people. It will have a different effect on Cas and Dean as you already started to see [in the Season 7 finale]. But I will say what you think you saw might not be exactly what you saw.”
We know that these flashbacks could potentially start to be shown during the second episode of the season, which is the first installment in which Collins is expected to appear. As of this writing, the actor has been penciled in for eight episodes this season, which is a larger presence than he had back when he was only used sporadically last year. However, it is still less than when he was a regular during season 6.
We know that we are going to meet some other interesting characters in purgatory this season — including a vampire who could end up helping Dean escape, but could have some rather evil intentions all his own.
