The Blacklist season 5: Megan Boone on Liz’s new sense of fun

When The Blacklist season 5 premiere airs on NBC, you are going to see the show adopt a new spirit, and in some ways a new tome. Should the show have revealed a year ago that Reddington was Liz Keen’s daughter? Regardless of whether or not the reveal is true (there are some theories out there about that), we do think that there is a new-found sense of fun with the show that wasn’t quite there previously. You’re going to get an opportunity now to see her navigate this crazy world with a man she genuinely believes to be her father, and that should lead to some hi-jinks and adventures. She also now may feel a greater sense of trust. While Reddington may be a far-from-perfect man, she’s more confident than ever before that he has the best of intentions at heart and isn’t here to try to throw some sort of grenade all over her life.

So in previewing what lies ahead for her character more as a part of a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Megan Boone had the following to say about the latest dynamic that is presented on within the story:

“Navigating the interpersonal and moral negotiations of a criminal informant’s liaison in the FBI is a risky balancing act, especially when he happens to be your father. That adds a layer of complexity to the relationship, and while Liz just couldn’t seem to get it together in the past when she didn’t know who either of her parents were or why Red had a vested interest in her, a weight has been lifted. She’s empowered when she is let in on the secret, and she might even be having actual fun trying to keep it all together now. The challenges are exciting without all of that confusion.”

We anticipate that as we dive further and further into season 5, there may be some eventual struggles that do open up for Reddington and Liz — after all, you do have the contents of that suitcase to contend with still, and we do have a feeling that there are going to be some unfortunate problems that come about as a result of that! For now, though, let’s just enjoy the ride that we’re on and take heed of whatever bumps in the road happen when we come around to them. It’s The Blacklist, so obviously they have a role to play.

Meanwhile, be sure to also let us know in the comments if you’re interested in seeing more of Liz and Reddington in this different, lighthearted environment.
