HBO orders Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen pilot

The Leftovers co-creator, Damon Lindelof, has a new series in development after HBO order a pilot for Watchmen.

According to Variety, HBO has ordered additional scripts for the new series that is based on the landmark DC Comics miniseries of the same name.

The series follows characters set “in a universe in which the appearance of costumed heroes in the mid-20th Century had altered the course of history — leading to U.S. victory in Vietnam and a Nixon presidency that stretched into the mid-1980s — “Watchmen” followed a group of crime fighters investigating the murder of one of their own. In the process, those characters — including Doctor Manhattan, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, and Rorschach — uncover a conspiracy with enormous implications.” The characters are based by characters from the Charlton Comics library, which is owned by DC.

This news comes after Lindelof teased on Instagram that he was back in the writers room working on his next project. In addition, Lindelof posted a photo of a statue modeled after an image from the comics along with the caption “Day One.”

This isn’t the first time HBO has attempted to develop Watchmen as a series. In 2014, HBO made an effort but ultimately abandoned the effort. Lindelof has decided to start from the beginning of his effort and will begin development for the project in June.

This marks Lindelof’s second project at HBO. His first was The Leftovers, which ended its three season run on HBO recently. After the success and acclaim of The Leftovers, we believe that Damon Lindelof is the man for to make Watchmen a success. There’s also a certain show known as Lost still on his resume.

A Watchmen TV series also adds to HBO’s comic book business and could be the next big series after the fantasy-drama series, Game of Thrones, has 15 episodes left over two seasons.

Comic book series have been a expanding over multiple networks including Netflix’s The Runaways, and the CW’s The Flash, Supergirl, and Arrow. ABC has also entered into the comic book arena with Inhumans. These types of shows attract a good number of audience members and who should far well for HBO. Watchmen already was a big-budget movie directed by Zack Snyder, but there may be more opportunities here to dive into the source material.

No matter what happens, we can’t wait to see this new series potentially come to fruition.
