Chicago Med season 3: Is Dr. Latham returning — and should he be?

Dr. Latham

Is Dr. Latham returning to Chicago Med for the upcoming third season? Obviously, he’s a character who really should be back.

When you think about this character, there is really nobody else out there quite like him. He is black, an orthodox Jew, on the autism spectrum, and one of the most brilliant medical professionals that Chicago Med has. While his bedside manner and communication with other doctors often does leave something to be desired, he’s shown a knack for treatment and getting the job done like few others. At times his attempts as of late to communicate and open up have left him more vulnerable, but that is just a fascinating part of his journey. He’s going to have bumps in the road as he figures out things for the first time. The character is performed beautifully by Ato Essandoh, and we were lucky to speak with him earlier this year about what goes into playing the part.

Well, the good news now is that there is no need to be concerned about whether or not Essandoh is returning as Latham, because he is! The actor actually confirmed that earlier this summer by getting involved in one of the country’s greatest trends of the past month: Standing outside and staring at the eclipse. (Luckily, he was wearing the proper glasses — we don’t need Latham to lose his vision!) This it’s not clear as of yet how many episodes he’ll be a part of, his story is very much linked to Connor Rhodes’ (Colin Donnell) and we’d love to see him work even more with some other characters. If we were to have it our way, we would promote him to series regular and just keep him around permanently, but we also know that Essandoh has a lot of other things going on and it may be nice to step into a wide array of different projects.

The hardest part of dealing with the Chicago Med season 3 hiatus right now the uncertainty. We’d love to say that there is some sort of defined return date for the series on NBC, but the reality here is that nothing is official as of yet. Our personal hope is just that it’s back by early 2018 just so that the show can help to get us through the winter doldrums; the worse-case scenario is that we’re stuck waiting from now until spring and NBC puts it into the old timeslot occupied by Chicago Justice. We’ve seen over the years covering shows at CarterMatt that this is a hard timeslot to establish any sort of consistency in.

Are you glad that Dr. Latham is returning?
