America’s Got Talent finalist spotlight: How Preacher Lawson could win

Preacher Lawson

For the second straight year, we are here to kick off one of our favorite article series: The America’s Got Talent finalist spotlights. There are ten people now in the running for the grand prize, but only one of them can win. Can any of them, including Preacher Lawson. take home the grand prize? You can debate that if you’d like in the comments, but we’re assuming within this series that they can.

Today, we at CarterMatt are going to look more extensively at Preacher, one of the funniest people to ever appear on the show. He’s got a big character, great charisma, and an ability to really get people to relate to his crazy stories. He’s funny in a way that is universal, and there’s at least a shot that he could be the first pure comedian to take home the grand prize after so many finished in second place.

His strengths – Preacher’s got it going for him that there really hasn’t been another comic like him for most of the season. He’s super-physical, he plays big and broad, and he appeals to a family crowd very well. He’s not someone who is going to go out on stage and try to be overly divisive; he understands the audience that he is performing to on this show, and he plays to it really well.

We know that comedians don’t often like to be vulnerable, but we do also think that he did himself a rather big favor on this past episode by sharing more of his story. It makes people want to root for him even more.

What does he need to watch out for? – Trying to do too much in a very short amount of time. Preacher’s delivery is very much of the rapid-fire variety, and it does absolutely make some sense that he would want to get as much content into as short of a time as humanly possible. He just needs to make sure that he gives his jokes enough time to breathe, since some of America isn’t altogether refined with standup comedy and may not know when to laugh otherwise.

How he wins – If he gets to perform later in the show, that helps — one of the problems there is that singers have been at the end of every single episode since the start of the live shows, provided that you consider Darci to be a singer. He also needs to deliver one of the funniest sets of all time, remind people why he loves comedy so much and just take them to another world for a few minutes.

Even if Preacher doesn’t win, he’ll be fine — he’s going to book a ton of gigs all over the country after this, and maybe someone at NBC does look at him for a larger role in an additional project. As of right now, we’d say that he’ll make top five or even top three. We’d love for him to win, but singers remain the consensus favorite most of the time.
