Supernatural season 13 poster has Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins

Supernatural season 13 poster

The Supernatural season 13 poster has officially been revealed now courtesy of the fine folks over at The CW, and they’ve definitely done their part to give this one a cinematic feel. If you look at it at the bottom of this article, you may think briefly that the network is going for a big-budget movie poster with the way that they’ve centered the three leads’ heads peering out into darkness from some sort of sourced light. The slogan at the bottom — “dawn of darkness” — makes that feel all the more appropriate. It’s one of the cooler posters that we’ve seen here at CarterMatt for the show.

There was also clearly a lot of thought that went into this. For one, you have Misha Collins’ Castiel (still an unknown in some ways for this season) being bathed in light far more so than either Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Is this meant to be some sort of reference to Cas being an angel, or is this more representative of him being reborn in light after his apparent death at the end of last season? the slogan itself is intentionally an “oxymoron,” given that dawn is often the birth of light and the moment that the darkness starts to fade.

Based on the primary stories that we’re hearing about for season 13, the show’s going to be starting off in a very dark, rather-difficult place for some of its characters. For one, the departure of Cas is going to leave a void for many of the characters. Take a look at what executive producer Andrew Dabb had to say on that subject to TVLine:

“…One of the reasons that Cas is deader than normal [is] because we want to play with that [grief] … With Dean, especially, everything he’s lost… He feels it hard. He’s put so much hope in building up Team Free Will 2.0 and building up this very cool group of people he’s working with. He’s opened himself up in a lot of different ways with Mary, with Crowley, with Cas, and he’s been punched in the heart about a million times in the last season. So you’re dealing with someone who’s a little bit more guarded, a little bit more jaded, a little bit more not necessarily asking, ‘What’s it all for?’ but certainly asking, ‘Did they do the right thing? Should they have made the sacrifices they made? Should they have asked other people to make the sacrifices they made?’ Those are all questions that are at the forefront of our guys’ minds.”

With all of this mind, maybe the dawn of darkness really just is a clever way to describe some of what Dean’s mental state is going to be as we get into this season. He’ll be struggling, and in a way that is quite different than how we’ve seen him in the past.
