American Idol 16 cancels auditions in Houston, San Antonio

Idol auditions

Obviously, the audition process for a singing show like American Idol isn’t anywhere near the priority right now when you consider everything going on in Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Nonetheless we’re a TV site, so of course will report on matters pertaining to television when they come out.

Today, the ABC series announced that they have canceled the American Idol bus auditions that were previously planned in Houston on September 2 and San Antonio on September 4. This is a move that is done out of sensitivity for those who are recovering from the hurricane and the flooding, and to ensure that the focus is where it needs to be.

Of course, you can argue that the show could actually be a symbol of hope for those who are suffering in the city, and that there could be a prospective singer who tries to audition as a chance for their family to rebuild following what happened. If you are one of those people, we would recommend that you head over to the official website for the show and audition online. If you don’t have a way to do that, try to head out to Shreveport for the auditions on September 4. We’ve said this a few times over the years now, but there isn’t all that drastic of a difference between auditioning in person and doing so online. If you are a talented singer and you make your presence and personality felt, you will have a way to advance either way.

For those who are not aware, these auditions are not the ones that you tend to see with the judges that air on television — typically, these auditions just involve a producer and a member of casting and are mostly about getting you to that point in the process. The actual auditions for some of the most talented singers are going to be coming up later this fall, potentially at Disney properties, with Katy Perry and some of the other judges. There’s still no word on who those other people will be officially, but there is likely going to be a few names announced for that sooner rather than later. (Reports are that Katy wants both Lionel Richie and Charlie Puth to be a part of the show.)

The new season of American Idol will premiere on ABC in the new year, and there will likely be some format tweaks that are not officially announced as of yet. The hope is for the network to be able to revive a franchise that, in its heyday, was one of the most lucrative in all of television. Unfortunately, since that point it’s fallen on harder times, but it still wasn’t one of the lower-rated shows on television at the time in which the fifteenth season ended on Fox back in the spring of 2016.

For now…

The most important thing for those in Houston is that you stay safe. If you want to get involved, be sure to reach out to the Red Cross with a donation in some shape or form.
