Supernatural season 13 spoilers: Why did it have to be stakes?

Who doesn’t love vampires? Well, actually a number of people — the vampire crazy of a few years back is over, but they’re still scary! They also should provide a little bit of fodder still for one of the wackier, more entertaining episodes that’s going to happen during Supernatural season 13. One of the great things about the show being on the air so long is that it allows for the writers to take on a variety of different topics, and you’re going to see that with an episode airing early next year.

If you want a teaser, here is a rather-glorious one that co-showrunner Andrew Dabb handed down in a recent interview with TVLine:

“We’ve got an episode coming up after our midseason break, which we’re essentially titling ‘Stakes on a Train.’ It’s our version of a train heist with vampires.”

(Since Dabb decided to make a movie reference in his potential episode title, we decided to make a different one in the title for this article.)

Doing a straight-up vampire episode is obviously not something that will drop many jaws among the Supernatural fandom at this point, given that this is something that we’ve seen play out in some different forms already. With that, the focus has to be more instead on coming up with a way to twist it. We think that throwing some vampires aboard a train is a way to do that. Production-wise, there are also some cool things that the writers can do given that you are effectively confining Sam and Dean to a limited amount of space and then forcing them to work through that in order to see just what they can do.

As much fun as vampires aboard a train may be, we’re also not going to be oblivious to the fact that there are some other big selling points to this season, including a Scooby-Doo crossover that is probably going to go down as one of the most random things that the show has ever done. This is probably in turn why we love it, given that there is something so appealing about seeing a show like Supernatural push the envelope and try to have a little bit of fun. Anytime they are doing something new and different, we’re going to be inclined to check it out and see what comes from it.
