American Idol 16 has discussed judge position with Shania Twain

Shania Twain

Would Shania Twain be a perfect American Idol judge? It’s hard to argue against it, given that she’s one of the best country singers of all time. Her hits are known all over the world, her name is immediately recognizable, and she’s made an appearance on the show in the past. There’s really nothing to hate about the idea of having her on there — it also would give the show a country representation, which is super-important given the popularity of the show in Middle America.

Speaking to Access Hollywood in a new interview, Twain was very careful as to how often she’d talked with producers about the gig; meanwhile, she also expressed her fondness for Katy Perry, who is already on board the panel:

“We’ve talked … back and forth and it’s something I think I would enjoy … [I would] sit with Katy Perry any day. I love her. She’s got so much personality and she’s an amazing talent.”

What’s the issue that could keep this from happening? It’s hard to say. Maybe producers have someone else in mind for the role of judge, or maybe they just don’t have the money for someone of Shania’s caliber. It also matters if the series is going for three judges or four for the revival — and you also have to remember that there’s probably only going to be one country singer on the panel. Some other contenders for that spot are going to be former judge Keith Urban and also Luke Bryan.

Personally, our ideal panel (now that we know that Twain is in contention) is her, Perry, Charlie Puth, and then Lionel Richie. That’s a really great mixture of styles, experience, and understanding of the music business. This is also a group that would probably get viewers to watch for a few weeks at least, and then the chemistry and quality of the contestants would carry the day the rest of the way. We do all sit around and speculate about judges for many weeks on end, but when the dust does settle it’s typically more about the performers more than it is anyone else. They’re the people you will remember down the line. (This is one of the things that Idol has always had over the competitors — a sense of legacy. There really is no legacy when it comes to a show like The Voice with the exception of a contestant or two — it’s more of an entertainment show at this point rather than one about legitimately finding a superstar.)
