Outlander season 3 notes: David Berry Q&A; why Claire’s smile stands out
As many of you know, the Australian actor (best known for A Place to Call Home) is set to appear in the third season as Lord John Gray. Fans of the Diana Gabaldon books know this character well; if you’re new to the series, we think the story here does a nice job of introducing you to the dynamics that you should be looking forward to seeing from him and Jamie Fraser (pictured above). Lord John is a big part of the story with Sam Heughan’s character in the present, and eventually gets his own series from Gabaldon, as well. We don’t think that gives all that much away about what he actually contributes to the story which is how we like to balance things here at the site.
On Friday, Berry took part in a brief Q&A through the Berry’s Beefsteak Twitter account — it gives you a small sense of who he is if you’re still getting to know him. It’s also a reminder that the man has quite a bit on his plate right now in between multiple TV projects and having a new baby.
These answers are all just fun and don’t include any real spoilers on the show itself. Read ahead with confidence!
For the record, this answer excites us greatly! Granted, we haven’t actually heard anything about a Lord John TV series, but it’s nice to store in the back of mind at the moment.
We’ve heard a little bit about Berry’s story getting cast on the show already, including that it was quite a whirlwind and was thrown into this universe almost right away. We’re thrilled to see that he enjoys being a part of the Outlander family.
Analyzing the latest gif from Starz
We don’t exactly think that this one is worth several paragraphs of analysis, mostly because there is just one moment in it that really stands out: Claire seems to smile at her daughter Brianna, but then changes her facial expression the moment she looks up. Maybe this is natural, given that you’re not going to carry around a smile that big in the real world very often. Or, maybe you view this as more evidence of how much Claire values her daughter. Bree is the biggest reminder that she has of Jamie, and she looks towards her as a way to remember the time that the two had together.
You’re going to see Bree throughout various stages of her life in the early going this season. As a result of that, we hope that we can also learn a thing or two more about the evolution of her relationship with Claire. This is essential for where the two are prior to Claire heading back to the past.

The novellas, novels, and such that Diana Gabaldon has written about Lord John Grey are definitely fodder for a spin-off series about LJG, his family, his valet “wee” Tom Byrd, and other characters.
