The Originals season 5 spoilers: Reign alum Torrance Coombs signs on

Torrance Coombs

There’s now another reason to be excited for The Originals season 5 on The CW — Torrance Coombs is on board!

As first reported by Entertainment Weekly, Coombs (who was on Reign prior to a recent role on ABC’s Still Star-Crossed) is going to be a major character named Declan, and a possible love interest for Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) to boot. He is described as “a flirtatious, roguish and charming Irish chef, who is unaware of the supernatural underbelly of New Orleans or that the woman he is involved with is part of an infamous family of vampires.” Sound exciting to anyone? If nothing else, it should prove interesting to see Coombs get to play a major part on a show that is not a period piece — that’s been his bread and butter for a while. (He’s also well-regarded for his part on The Tudors.)

It should also be super-fun to see Hayley get to establish some more normalcy in her life. It’s understandable after everything that she’s been through to want something a little more normal, and after eight years away from the chaos of season 4, maybe she’s found that. Of course, the reality with this show is that nothing stays altogether normal for long, and we figure that sooner or later, someone is going to turn up and upset the metaphorical apple cart.

Meanwhile, Toombs is not the only prominent man joining the always-and-forever family. Jedidiah Goodacre (who had a role as Chad Charming on Descendants) is set to be Roman. He has ties to Hope in Mystic Falls, and described as “a devilish and charming schoolmate of Hope Mikaelson. Roman is a recently turned vampire who becomes curious about Hope’s family after she’s involved in a mysterious incident at school.” This role should prove fun just from the vantage point of learning about how someone Hope’s age perceives her. We don’t know all that much about the present iteration of her, but we’re certainly excited to find out and learn more about what she thinks about herself, let alone what others think of her.

What’s also interesting about Goodacre’s character here is the chance that he could have a role long beyond The Originals in the event that The CW decides to do something more with the franchise. There are discussions about a Hope-based spin-off show to keep the spirit of the show going, but the reality there is that we’re not going to learn more about that one way or another for months. There are some other big priorities at the moment, including plotting things out to ensure that The Originals itself as a worthy series finale. This is the sort of thing that matters the most since we don’t quite know what the future holds just yet.

What do you think about these two castings?
