CBS plotting potential American Idol competitor via Scooter Braun

Do we really need another singing show on TV at the moment? We definitely don’t think that we do … but here we are with news, anyway.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the folks over at CBS are in the process of working on some sort of singing-show format executive-produced by prolific manager Scooter Braun (best known for his work with Justin Bieber). While we do like the idea of someone behind the scenes operating a singing show rather than an artist or just some reality TV juggernaut, it’s hard to pour the praise on such an idea without knowing a whole lot of anything about the format of it. For the best being, the only thing that is really known at the moment is that it could be based on an existing format rather than a totally new concept. It’s also to be seen whether or not Braun would serve as an on-air personality.

If this show ends up happening, every major broadcast network would have a singing show — weren’t we past this trend? NBC has of course The Voice, whereas with ABC you’ve got their upcoming revival of American Idol. Meanwhile, over on Fox (the former American Idol network) there is another singing show in The Four that is based on another concept that is out there.

There are two major problems that come with there being another major singing show — this time on CBS.

1. Dilution of viewers – There are only so many people who want to see singing, and if people get too much of it, they’re going to lose their interest. It’s just something that we’ve seen so many times over at this point. It’s one of the reasons why American Idol lost steam over time and why The X Factor didn’t work in America anywhere near the same way that it did over in the UK.

2. Dilution of talent – There are only so many genuinely good singers in America at this point — think however many have been on these shows before, coupled with just how many of them have been in some other places over the years, as well. There’s also YouTube now, which is ironically where Braun first discovered Bieber in the first place. If there was ever someone who could attest to the need for there to not be singing shows, it’s probably him.

If anything more happens with this show or we hear more information, we’ll be sure to let you know. Right now, this is still in such an early stage that it could ultimately go either way as to whether or not it happens.
