Grey’s Anatomy alum Patrick Dempsey (finally) returning to TV

Patrick Dempsey

We’ve been waiting to report on a Patrick Dempsey return to TV for quite some time; now, we’re pleased that we finally can.

Today, it was confirmed that the former Grey’s Anatomy star is going to be appearing in the ten-episode EPIX production The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair. The story is an adaptation of the Joël Dicker story, and will feature director Jean-Jacques Annaud behind the scenes. In a statement, Annaud had the following to say about taking on the project:

The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair was the ideal project for my first American television venture … It is a rich and nuanced novel set in a small New England town and has all the elements for a classic mystery. Having MGM [and producers Tarak Ben Ammar and Fabio Conversi] as my partners has given me the ability to assemble a formidable cast and a talented crew. Their enthusiasm for Harry Quebert is equal to my own.”

The story in part revolves around the title character (played by Dempsey) being accused of murdering 15-year old Nola Kellergan, and we could see this mystery play out more as the first season progresses. It is bringing a great deal to the table here in terms of intrigue and drama, and you’re also getting a great cast as a whole with Virginia Madsen (fresh off of Designated Survivor) and Damon Wayans Jr. (New Girl) taking part in some capacity. This show proves further that EPIX is taking itself seriously as it looks to become more of a major player, and this is easily one of their biggest productions to date.

With Dempsey, we feel like much of what he’s been doing can be best defined as “strategic,” given that he had utterly no reason to hurry back to television. Why would he? Just remember/consider here that this is a guy who made so much money on Grey’s Anatomy that he probably never had to work again unless he really wanted to. This was a chance for him to dive back into scripted drama in a role that he found appealing for him. He can take on some meaty drama and play a new sort of character in a venue he feels is right for him.

Still, the exit of Dempsey from Grey’s Anatomy remains one of the most stunning TV departures in recent memory, mostly because of how beloved he was by some of the show’s longtime fans and also how significant the Derek character was to Meredith’s life. He’s still missed there, even though the show has moved on effectively.
