Chicago Med season 3: What’s the right night for it on NBC?

Chicago Med season 3

Unfortunately, the wait for Chicago Med season 3 looks as though it’s going to be a long one.

While we know that the NBC series is coming back for another batch of episodes, there is still a major question that is reverberating through the fandom: When? To date, “midseason” is the word being thrown around, but that can mean a wide array of different things. It could mean that the show is going to air in January, or it could mean as late as March depending on what the folks over at the network decide.

There are a couple of interesting variables that do complicate things even more with any show premiering at this point. For one, you have to look at the performance of some news series. NBC is airing new military drama The Brave Monday nights after The Voice, and that feels like a rather risky proposition. If this show ends up being a commercial flop for the network, what that means is that their primo timeslot could be open for another show. Meanwhile, they are putting great stock in the ability of Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders to succeed on Tuesdays after This Is Us. These are the two greatest risks that they are taking, and they raise questions based on where Chicago Med could air.

In general, let’s look at the three timeslots that we consider to be the likely homes for the show.

Mondays at 10:00 p.m. ET – This is the pipe dream — The Brave ends, and NBC puts on Chicago Med and gives it a great lead-in. This seems unlikely, just because they’re more likely to use this spot on a new show much as they’ve done for the past year or so. Still, we’ve seen before that One Chicago shows do a good job of retaining viewership from The Voice. For example, Chicago Fire did that for many years.

Tuesdays at 10:00 – A little more realistic. It’s a bit of a misnomer to say that it would have This Is Us as a lead-in for the entire season given that the hit drama airs shorter seasons than some of its network counterparts. Still, having it for just three or four episodes in the winter would be enough to get the show off to a great start and hopefully on the way to a season 4 renewal.

Sundays at 9:00 – If we had to guess, we’d say that it feels like Med will end up in the spot that Chicago Justice once did, given that it has enough of a dedicated following to survive airing there and we don’t think NBC would throw an all-new series into that timeslot for the second year in a row. Another candidate for this timeslot could be Timeless, but with it not filming for many months still, we don’t know if it would even be ready in time. (It may premiere in the summer.)

When do you think would be the right time for Chicago Med season 3 to come on the air? Be sure to share in the comments!
