Shadowhunters season 2 finale spoilers: Jonathan’s fate tip of the iceberg

Shadowhunters season 2 finale

Is Jonathan living or dead going into the Shadowhunters season 2 finale? It’s understandably a question that many people have. Yet, it’s also not something that may matter as much as you would think when you consider some of the other balls that still remain in the air for the show and some of its characters.

Ultimately, the end of Jonathan doesn’t necessarily represent peace for everyone in the whole series; as a matter of fact, it’s far from it. He’s almost one of the world’s biggest and most-evil distractions from the fact that Valentine is still out there, he’s dangerous, and he’s willing to do almost anything and everything to get what he wants. He’s also got an alliance that seems to be forming with the Seelie Queen based on what happened at the end of this past episode.

In a new interview with TV Guide that serves to set the finale up further, Katherine McNamara passed along the following message as to whether or not Sebastian/Jonathan is alive or dead:

“Sebastian is one of the most powerful beings in the shadow world, so we never really know what is going on with him. I think it’s safe to say that we should all not relax yet because whether or not Sebastian is alive or dead – or rather Jonathan is alive or dead – there’s still Valentine to deal with. He still has two of the mortal instruments, and he knows where the third is, and he’s on his way. So we have a lot to deal with. And also, there’s the Seelie Queen (Sarah Hyland), who’s having her own sort of side scheme happening as well.”

By the end of the finale, it’s possible that there could be some other dead characters beyond just Sebastian, so that is something else that you should anticipate and be prepared for. After all, this is a series now that is morphing into take-no-prisoners mode in its final stage and it really should be. With a show like this, you often do have an odd relationship between life and death. You want there to be some genuine stakes and you need for there to be death; otherwise, some of the battles and the crises at the heart of the story don’t have anywhere near as much weight.

One way or another, whatever happens over the course of the finale is going to be paving the way for the upcoming third season of the show. A renewal has already been commissioned, so we’re now just in the thick of a waiting game to see what the fine folks over at Freeform (coupled with the show’s producers) have in terms of ideas.
