Tom Welling had discussed Supergirl role before joining Lucifer season 3

Tom Welling is going to be a part of Lucifer season 3 in a major role, but what may surprise some out there to learn is that at one point, there were talks about him joining Supergirl for some sort of role. Obviously, Welling is known for playing Clark on Smallville, and he wouldn’t be the only alum from that show appearing on the CW series. After all, Erica Durance is coming on board as Alura in season 3, and we’ve already seen Laura Vandervoort in the role of Indigo.

So why didn’t Welling take that part on? Well, much of it had to do with him just wanting to do something a little different — and something that was the right tone. Speaking per Entertainment Weekly in a new interview — one that includes a talk on the overall legacy of Smallville and the series finale — Tom said the following:

“I know Greg [Berlanti] quite well and there had been some discussion, but they’re different worlds. There was an idea that maybe Supergirl, appearing on that, but it’s such a different show. I’m older now, I don’t look the same. Appearing on that show as Clark Kent or even Superman, for me, I would not want to watch me do that at all. They just have such a different tone. To me, because this is still even a DC Universe, which wasn’t a consideration in the beginning, but Lucifer is still DC, so in some ways it’s one foot in, one foot out, but it wasn’t a motivator for me to join the show. It just so happens that it was connected in that way.”

We understand where Welling is coming from, especially since Clark Kent is one of those roles that is challenging to move on from. Lucifer, meanwhile, is a chance to do something completely different. It’s separate from the CW universe (after all, it airs on Fox), it’s rather comedic, and it should give him a chance to do some new things.

Do we still want to see Welling turn up on Supergirl in the future? Sure, but it’d be fine to see the show stop by in a different role — take, for example, a villain. We’d be excited to see him play someone who is either sinister or a complete psychopath. It’d be a great nod to fans that wouldn’t require him in the process to be the same sort of character that he’s played in the past. We’d love to see this happen, but time will tell if it actually does. After all, he’s going to be rather busy now thanks to the new Lucifer gig!
