Bones season 13 revival very much possible — though not anytime soon

Is it too early to start the discussions for Bones season 13? It certainly seems that way. However, it’s not too early to have discussions about future discussions and if the show has a chance to be revived down the road.

Given that Fox has been in the revival game for a while now with Prison Break and The X-Files, we’re not altogether shocked they would pursue something with the Emily Deschanel – David Boreanaz series in the future. Brennan and Booth are beloved characters, the show has a devoted following, and let’s be honest: The ratings for some of Fox’s other properties aren’t very good. There are many reasons to bring this show back for another go. It’s just not going to happen anytime soon given that Boreanaz has another show already in SEAL Team airing over on CBS and Bones just ended their “final” season this year. As much as we would want to see it back (and we really do!) there needs to be some time passed before bringing it back. Telling us something is a “final season” and then bringing it back within a year seems like a bit of a mind game to play with a fanbase since then it never really was final – this is just next season.

Speaking per Entertainment Weekly at the TCA Summer Press Tour on Tuesday, Fox programming head Dana Walden made her thoughts on the subject of doing more of the show:

“I think David Boreanaz would be upset with his new show premiering if I said it was any time soon … I would anticipate ultimately we would happily do something around Bones, and that group was so close and the experience was so good for all of them. I can’t say definitively, we’ve had no conversations, it’s just too soon, and they’re all pursuing different things right now.”

Obviously the future of David’s series is one factor in the future of Bones, coupled with the fact that as of earlier this year, he didn’t seem all that interested in coming back and doing any more. If SEAL Team remains on the air, what we could see in the future is potentially some sort of two-night event or a series of movies for Bones, similar to what USA is doing with Psych. Bring the show back around the holiday season, turn it into a fun event, and give longtime fans a little more of what they want. We’re surprised that more shows don’t consider this, given that the installments would be so irregular that there would be appointment television (something that networks are struggling with in this modern age of watching TV whenever you want any way you want). They’d always feel new and fresh, and not so much like something that was being done just for the sake of getting more content on the show.

Ultimately, let’s see where things stand down the road. Give everyone a little bit more time to breathe; we do think that if Bones is revived, there will be less of a layoff than there was after The X-Files season 10 … consider that hopeful if you want to.
