Supernatural season 13: Jensen Ackles’ super-sad dream about the end

Jensen Ackles

Whenever Supernatural ends its run, it’s going to be sad. With that said, it’ll be so much sadder if Jensen Ackles’ idea for the end becomes reality.

Granted, one thing that we should add here is that Jensen is not necessarily saying that the idea that he has, which came to him via a dream (as most abstract ideas do), should be the way that the series drops the current. Nonetheless, it’s certainly cerebral and interesting. Take a look below, courtesy of the fine folks at Entertainment Weekly — it’s a long read, but a worthwhile/interesting one at the same time:

“I can see it right now. It’s just one scene. Think: Middle America, Big Sky country. It’s just wheat fields as far as the eye can see, and there’s an intersection, a crossroads, oddly enough. I drive up in the Impala, and I park in the middle of the intersection. There’s nobody for miles. I get out of the car and I look in the distance — and it’s like Lawrence of Arabia when Omar Sharif was running up with the camel — I just see this thing coming in the distance, and it gets closer and closer and closer and closer. It’s a guy on a motorbike. And we never really see his face. He’s got a helmet on. But he walks up and I give him a nod, and I take a walk around the Impala very slowly and I walk back over to him and I hand the keys to him. And he takes off his helmet — we don’t see who it is — he hands the helmet to me and hands me the keys to the bike. From his back, he gets in the car and I watch the Impala drive off. And then I turn and I look at the bike that’s got one seat. And I put the helmet on, start the bike, [give] one last look to the Impala, it’s now gone, and I take off. Because I don’t need the extra seat anymore. And I even have the soundtrack in my head. There were no words spoken. I had this swelling score. It was like some Robert Zemeckis film.”

In terms of symbolism, there is something very interesting about Dean beginning the next phase of his life alone — but without the Impala, his brother, or anyone else, it’s kind of sad. This show could be the story about these brothers in a specific phase of their lives, and the series finale could push them forward into whatever the next phase is.

With that said, we do think the more likely scenario with a show like this is that the brothers go out swinging, and they’re still out there and capable of being brought back for some other reason in the future — just in case The CW ever wants to revive the show if Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are still interested. There are shows that could kill off the main characters or set them off on some solo course in the closing minutes, but we don’t think that this is really one of them.

How do you think Supernatural should conclude its run?
