Wynonna Earp season 3 renewal confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con
In some ways, you can consider this renewal both surprising and unsurprising at the same time. It’s fairly common that Syfy makes you wait for renewal decisions on their shows, especially ones that have lower ratings. Given that Wynonna Earp does have lower numbers than its timeslot companions Dark Matter and Killjoys, we never thought that an additional episode order was guaranteed. We just never wanted to take this funny, inspiring, and oft-emotional show for granted and assume that it would be around forever.
Now, let’s dive into some of the aspects for the comic-book adaptation that likely led to the renewal. While its ratings may have been lower than some other Comic-Con shows, it is extremely consistent along the way. Meanwhile, it frequently trends on social media in ways that few other Syfy series do, and beyond that, it also has an extremely loyal following online across all social platforms. The show is fantastically crafted, inclusive, and a hell of a good time week after week. In an era where it becomes harder and harder to detach yourself from the world and the present-day chaos, this sort of show is a beacon.
To go along with the Comic-Con announcement, we also have a pair of official statements to share rejoicing the very-good news! Let’s begin with IDW Entertainment President David Ozer:
“Fans have been passionately embracing Wynonna Earp since its debut. Syfy recognized that passion and when coupled with superior writing, acting, directing and production values, saw that Wynonna Earp was more than just a distinctly unique television series. We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Syfy and look forward to another fun season of incredible entertainment with the cast and crew of Wynonna Earp.”
Meanwhile, show executive producer Emily Andras added the following:
“We are so excited have this strong female-led, witty action series return for another season and deliver something special to our passionate fans around the world.”
There are still a handful of episodes still to enjoy this season, and following that, our feeling is that season 3 will likely premiere at some point in 2018. Here’s to hoping for some more badass Wynonna moments, great Doc Holliday one-liners, the show’s romantic pairings, and of course some cool and crazy villains. We imagine that one of the best things that would come with working on this show is the ability to be so creative and imaginative. You get to come up with villains that are so far and away different from others that are out there in the comic-book TV world, while preserving the humanity that exists with some of these characters.
