The X-Files season 11: Mitch Pileggi joining Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny

Mitch Pileggi

Great news for all of those wondering whether or not Mitch Pileggi would be joining Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny on The X-Files — his return for season 11 is now 100% official!

Deadline was the first to report that Pileggi will be bringing back FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner to the series for at least one episode and possibly more. Skinner was a part of multiple episodes for the recent season 10 revival of the show, and as a whole has appeared in 85 episodes of the long-running Fox series. While we know that the bulk of the show is entirely about Mulder and Scully, there is value in getting to have some other familiar faces thrown in there. Skinner brings a little bit of that nostalgia, in addition to being a key component for the team.

Getting Pileggi back is no easy feat, given that this is a guy who’s absolutely had a lot of other stuff going on. He’s done dozens of episodes of some other TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Dallas, and Sons of Anarchy, and tons of other programs. He may have one of the most active resumes of just about any actor working today in terms of the sheer number of shows that he’s been a part of.

The one big of bad news with this casting announcement is that it does very little in terms of giving us a sense of just what we’re going to see from Pileggi on the show, or what the overall story of season 11 will be. At the end of season 10 Mulder and Scully determined that one of their priorities was going to be finding their child, but such a character has not been cast as of yet publicly. We do hope that it happens, mostly so that these two characters can have a little more in the way of peace and the writers can officially tie together something that has been one of the biggest loose ends for the show for a rather long time now.

Unfortunately, the one thing that we can say for sure is that it’s a long wait until season 11 of The X-Files premieres on Fox. New episodes at the moment are not slated to air until early 2018; personally, we’d be fine if the show wants to premiere one after the NFC Championship Game, but that’s just a matter of our own personal preference as we want to see the show getting as strong a ratings as possible.

What do you want to see from Pileggi on The X-Files this time around, and are there any other classic characters that you want to see back? Be sure to share in the comments below!
