Doctor Who will announce Thirteenth Doctor on Sunday
In a new post on Twitter, BBC America confirmed that following the Wimbledon Men’s Final on Sunday, the network will be revealing for the first time the identity of this long-mysterious person. There have been rumors aplenty, with Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge being someone near the top of the list for much of the search — though sources close to her have also denied that such a casting is happening. We’ll end up seeing if that’s a smokescreen or not this weekend.
What we do know is that no matter who the new Doctor is, all signs point to this weekend being the first time that they’ve made an appearance in some sort of official capacity — including on the show’s set. Director Rachel Talalay recently wrapped initial filming on the upcoming Christmas Special, and she indicated that she had not filmed a scene with the new Doctor; more than that, she also made it clear that she had no official word to hand down as to their identity. Once this announcement is done, maybe she can start to plan ahead for whatever the future does hold.
What we know is that the Christmas Special will be first in-canon appearance by the new Doctor, and that this should serve as a rather-perfect springboard towards everything that could be coming up the rest of the way with season 11. Filming for those episodes could start as early as next year under the careful eye of Broadchurch alum Chris Chibnall, who is stepping into that position after years with Steven Moffat at the helm.
Admittedly, at this point we don’t care nearly as much as to who the new Doctor is; more than anything else, we just want to know that the announcement is made so that we can start speculating on the future from there. We like to think that the folks that are out there in casting have a better idea as to what to do with the franchise than we do as an outsider who has watched it for many years.
