Agents of SHIELD season 5 not visiting Comic-Con; Clark Gregg’s take + more

Clark Gregg

To everyone out there wanting to yell at Phil Coulson while sporting a proper SHIELD badge, bad news: Agents of SHIELD season 5 won’t be at Comic-Con. The news just came out earlier today, and while this wouldn’t be a big deal for most shows, it’s at least a medium-sized deal for the ABC hit.

For one, this is the first time ever that the show won’t be traveling to San Diego, where it’s had an incredibly large presence over the years. If you were there last year, odds are you remember all of the advertisements that were on the trains and elsewhere, ones that strongly indicated that you would be getting a chance to see Ghost Rider in the new season. The show lives and breathes comic-book lore, so this is a bummer … one that is hard to wrap your head around beyond the fact that the show isn’t returning until midseason after Marvel’s Inhumans ends. There may have been some scheduling issues; or, they may not have had anything to show or discuss yet. It costs networks and studios money to fly people out there and get everything set up, so they may not have wanted to do that without something substantial to back it up.

Here’s the biggest bummer: Agents of SHIELD is coming off of its best season yet, so honestly we would have been fine if Clark Gregg or someone else walked up on stage, dropped a mic, said “I know I’m awesome,” and then left. That would’ve easily been better than no panel and all … and certainly earned from this past year.

Gregg was one of the first to address the absence, posting a series of funny tweets referencing his co-stars Henry Simmons and Iain De Caestecker as the reason why they aren’t able to show up:

“Really disappointed we won’t get to hang with the world’s greatest fans at #SDCC17 #AgentsofSHIELD The truth is Henry and Iain have become so sexy that SDPD and [Marvel] security could no longer guarantee their safety. Last year even a team of actual Inhumans failed to prevent one (lucky) fan from nibbling off part of Iain’s ear lobe. In all seriousness, we’re really sorry to anyone who’s disappointed. We consider our loyal, badass fandom wholly responsible for S.5 and though the timing this year puts us at [New York Comic-Con] we WILL find a way to provide a special thanks to the bamfy #AgentsofSHIELD #DemAgents fam that got us here.”

As Gregg rightfully notes, there are other opportunities to see him and the rest of the cast elsewhere, given that many of them are fairly active in the convention circuit outside of the major ones that they tend to attend as a whole cast. We credit SHIELD in general for being one of the best shows out there in terms of being passionate alongside their fans. In particular, Clark is wonderful in his interactions and witty takes.

Sad? Disappointed? Okay with the absence? Share below no matter what!
