Poldark, Aidan Turner, Call the Midwife among TV Choice 2017 nominees

TV Choice

The 2017 TV Choice Awards are taking place on Monday, September 4 in London, and we’ll be the first to admit that we’re a newbie to them. As a primarily U.S.-based publication, we don’t get a sense too often of British TV awards shows, especially those that are celebrating these series in general.

This time around, though, there are many shows nominated for awards that have a rather solid following on the site, whether it be Broadchurch, Line of Duty, Poldark, Doctor Who, The Crown, or others. There are also two U.S. shows nominated in The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family, which isn’t a huge shock given that they are both popular globally.

Take a look at some of the nominees below, with some assorted analysis here and there. Given that we haven’t seen all of these shows, it’s hard to look at this through an unbiased lens.

As a quick note, you can vote for some of your favorites over here.

Best Drama Series

Broadchurch, ITV
Line Of Duty, BBC1
Our Girl, BBC1
Poldark, BBC1

Best Family Drama

Call The Midwife, BBC1
Casualty, BBC1
Doctor Who, BBC1
The Durrells, ITV

There are times that Doctor Who can be a bit scary for everyone in the family, no? We can say the same thing about some of the Call the Midwife subject matter. Still great shows, though.

Best New Drama

The Crown, Netflix
The Good Karma Hospital, ITV
Little Boy Blue, ITV
Victoria, ITV

For the record, The Crown is projected as the favorite to win the Emmy later this year, as well.

Best Entertainment Show

All Round To Mrs Brown’s, BBC1
Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, ITV
Celebrity Juice, ITV2
The Graham Norton Show, BBC1

Best Lifestyle Show

DIY SOS: The Big Build, BBC1
Gogglebox, Channel 4
Long Lost Family, ITV
Tattoo Fixers, E4

Best Reality Show

Big Brother/Celebrity Big Brother, Channel 5
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, ITV
The Island With Bear Grylls, Channel 4
The Only Way Is Essex, ITVBe

We’re not entirely sure that there is much about three out of these four shows that constitute “reality.”

Best Comedy

Benidorm, ITV
The Big Bang Theory, E4
Modern Family, Sky 1
Peter Kay’s Car Share, BBC1

Best Talent Show

Britain’s Got Talent, ITV
The Great British Bake Off, BBC1
MasterChef, BBC1
Strictly Come Dancing, BBC1

Best Daytime Show

The Chase, ITV
Loose Women, ITV
Pointless, BBC1
This Morning, ITV

Best Actor

Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock
George Rainsford, Casualty
David Tennant, Broadchurch
Aidan Turner, Poldark

Cumberbatch vs. Tennant vs. Turner is basically a Roman coliseum of fandoms.

Olivia Colman, Broadchurch
Michelle Keegan, Our Girl
Amanda Mealing, Casualty
Eleanor Tomlinson, Poldark
