Pride Weekend: Celebrating Piper and Alex of Orange is the New Black
Piper and Alex from Orange is the New Black have not had the most conventional relationships and their journey has definitely had some major hurdles. Let’s stop and remember here that they became involved with each other while committing crimes and later continued their relationship in jail. Very stressful circumstances (but also kind of thrilling, no?). Their relationship has not been an easy one, but it’s one that everyone is rooting for. They have both done some pretty terrible things to each other, but through it all they haven’t stopped loving one another. There are lots of TV couples that have fairly smooth relationships, and that’s one of the many reasons we love the Piper and Alex dynamic – they had to put in the work to make this happen making mistakes along the way like we all do in real life. It feels very real to a lot of us out there that understand that to keep a relationship going throughout the years, there needs to be effort and there will be stumbles, but with work, acceptance and forgiveness you can work through even the most difficult of scenarios.
Alex is the bad girl we all dream of: Gorgeous, mysterious and when she loves you, she loves you hard. At the same time we have seen her do Piper wrong, like by turning her in to the police to get time off her own sentence. We saw that it pained her to betray Piper, but like we said, she is a bad girl and when you love a bad girl, there are bumps in the journey to love.
Piper might be one of the most selfish characters we’ve seen on TV, but over the years she has slowly changed as she has learned to put others in front of her own wants and needs and that’s all because of her love for Alex. It took her a very long time to get to this point, and she backslid into her old ways a lot over the years, but it only made it all the more satisfying when we finally saw her realize how much she loved Alex and that she wanted to marry her.
Even though we were left with a major cliffhanger on Orange is the New Black season 5 (which leaves Alex and Piper’s lives hanging in the balance), we think that this show’s message is really about change and hope. We want to see these women grow and succeed past prison and we want to see them have healthy relationships. Piper and Alex’s relationship has always been a beacon of hope on this show of what could be if they weren’t in prison and how they make it work for the time being. After a very dark couple of seasons, all we want to see in season 6 is a Piper and Alex wedding – even if it happens inside the prison.
