Stephen Colbert bringing The Late Show to Russia!

Russia

Stephen Colbert is following in the footsteps of such other Daily Show alum as Samantha Bee and John Oliver. How so? Let’s just say that he’s spending some time in Russia.

In a new post on Twitter (ironically a response to Donald Trump), Colbert confirmed that he is filming some mysterious segment in Russia for The Late Show — he claimed that it was about James Comey and the nonexistent tapes, but that’s clearly a joke. Odds are, this will be related to politics in some form, similar to what happened when Bee was there doing some segments. (In the case of Oliver, he was actually there interviewing Edward Snowden for a segment on Last Week Tonight that drew a great deal of attention when it first came on the air.)

First of all, Colbert’s fashion for being in Russia is on-point. Second of all, we love that he’s doing this, just as we loved it when Conan O’Brien went to Cuba or Mexico. There is so much value in late-night comedians being able to get away from the desk and try to do some other things in other places. It adds a further buzz and a tinge of excitement to things, and we’ll just have to wait and see what this ends up being. We do hope that it examines the culture and the people of the country, given that this is something we don’t often see. So much of the time, what we get is instead a little more cut-and-dry or notable because of a politician or big figure at the center of it. The more the show mixes things up, the better off that we’re all going to be in terms of having an innovative, memorable program. So often all of the celebrity interviews and recurring segments do tend to blend together over time.

Hopefully, this segment will air in the coming weeks; when there is more news out there about it, we’ll be sure to let you know!
