Blue Bloods season 8: Where can the Erin Reagan story go from here?

Blue Bloods season 8

Blue Bloods season 8 will premiere on CBS a little bit later this fall, so with that, why not kick off some Erin Reagan discussion?

While this is one of the show’s strongest characters, we do think that she is the one with the most untapped potential of the entire group. She is the exception to so many of the show’s primary rules in that she is the only daughter of Frank, and the only person not directly in the police department of the show’s main cast. With that, there is potential for the writers to try a few different things and look at some alternate stories for the character if they choose.

For example, why not show more of the conflict between the D.A.’s office and the police? While there is some of this that you get a chance to see play out, more often than not it’s all over by the time you make it through an episode. Why not have that last for a few weeks and provide some variance there?

There are also a few other avenues that the show could explore with Erin next season, if they so chose.

1. A promotion – Could you give her even more power and show more of what that could be like? We do think that it’s coming, and it would ultimately be interesting to see Erin outrank virtually everyone on the show. We do think she’s one of the most deserving.

2. A love interest – She doesn’t need one, but wouldn’t it be fun to see her with that material? Maybe there’s a temptation to bring Jack (pictured above) back, but we think that romantically, she’s probably evolved past him and there are some other people out there who could challenge her more on an intellectual level.

3. More stories for her and Frank – Isolating these two characters is always great because she can rattle him in a way that neither Danny or Jamie can.

4. A significant arc – Think in terms of Matthew Gray Gubler on Criminal Minds this past season. While we do understand that Blue Bloods is a procedural, there would be something interesting about putting her in a position where she takes on a high-profile case that doesn’t go away after just an episode or two. This is also realistic to real life.
