Supergirl season 3: Should Oliver Queen cross over from Arrow?

Oliver Queen

Is there a case for Oliver Queen of Arrow to make his first-ever appearance on Supergirl the series this fall, and not just because of a four-part crossover event?

On paper, this idea may sound completely absurd, and for good reason given that Oliver is a non-powered character who would be surrounded by some of the most over-powered heroes and villains known to the entire DC Comics Universe. This is the big challenge to a character like Kara, who is easily the strongest of any of the heroes in the world established so far — she’s almost unbeatable. How do you create challenges for her? Much of that is by bringing in people who can take her on intellectually or emotionally, which is why some of the villains to date have been people who have noticed attached to her in some way beyond the destruction of National City.

However, this article is not so much about Kara, as it is about how Oliver on Supergirl could prove to be an ally to another interesting character: James Olsen’s Guardian.

The appeal of Guardian, so much so that he’s willing of several more spotlights if not a full-blown anthology series, is that he’s a powerless character in a powerful world. It’s reminiscent somewhat of Batman: The Animated Series, when there are some characters wandering about who have powers that Bruce Wayne / Batman has to outsmart. Oliver could be a great mentor to James in that he’s been there already. With Slade Wilson and his mirakuru soldiers, he had to figure out a way to beat them beyond just a fistfight. The same goes for Damien Darhk, even if we do want to subject the show to some understandable criticism over the way in which they chose to handle the end of that arc. There is something about having a mentor like Oliver that could do James well, especially since Kara cannot relate to him.

Also, there’s also something fun about seeing someone as stone-faced as Oliver surrounded by characters who can do things even beyond his imagination. He shouldn’t be in National City for more than one episode, given that much of what made Arrow season 5 so great was the continued presence of Oliver in a world that suited his character, not one decorated by people with all sorts of crazy powers or abilities mucking things up.

Do you think that a one-off for Oliver on Supergirl could be fun given the proper conditions? Feel free to share in the comments!
