The Handmaid’s Tale season 2: Premiere date, other hopes for Hulu drama

Handmaid's Tale season 2

Is the anticipation already beginning for The Handmaid’s Tale season 2? It’s fair to say so give how season 1 has taken the TV community by storm. It’s already being considered a potential favorite to garner Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, and it’s stirred up plenty of discussions at the same time. Elisabeth Moss is of course sensational, as is much of the cast that surrounds her.

So as you prepare for tomorrow’s finale on Hulu, the first thing that you should know is that there will for certain be a second season! This news was confirmed early in May in a statement by the provider’s SVP and Head of Content Craig Erwich:

“The response we’ve seen to The Handmaid’s Tale in just one week since its premiere has been absolutely incredible … It has been an honor to work with this talented team of cast and creators to develop a series that has struck such a chord with audiences across the country. As we continue to expand our strong slate of original programming, The Handmaid’s Tale is exactly the type of gripping and thought-provoking storytelling we want to bring to viewers. We can’t wait to explore the world of Gilead and continue [Margaret Atwood’s] vision with another season on Hulu.”

So how will this new batch of episodes be connected to the story so far? Speaking via Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Bruce Miller had the following to say about how the finale could carry over to season 2:

“There are going to be a lot of surprises. I think you’ll see sides of all the characters, sides that you haven’t seen before. You always want something that is satisfying [for a season finale] but gives you something new. No one wants to watch a television show that’s just tying up loose ends, and that’s not what we do. There are definitely cards turned over for every character in this final episode.”

This new season will probably bring even more characters into a dark place, but in what circumstance remains to be seen. This is a show with a good bit of creative capital beyond just a simple adaptation, and it should prove interesting to see what they choose to do with it.
