Outlander season 3 spoilers: How the show is structured versus Voyager

Voyager

As many Outlander fans may know at the moment, the upcoming third season is based on the Diana Gabaldon novel Voyager. It’s a book that is all about Jamie and Claire Fraser finding each other after many years, and two different eras, apart.

The show has a challenge, as they do with any other, of finding the right way to tell this story. There will be challenges, but as executive producer Ronald D. Moore noted to TV Guide (one of a couple different interviews he gave on the show while at the ATX Television Festival this past weekend), the show has a very specific way that it wants to tell them:

“The majority of the major events are in the season, but we are probably going to reorder them and present them slightly differently … The third book is a clean narrative as opposed to the second book –which was a very complicated narrative. It still went to Jamie’s storyline for a very long time and then Claire catches up.”

There are several different reasons why the show may change things up slightly, whether it be to include certain actors as much as possible in certain episodes or present story threads that are important to the narrative being told.  This is something that Moore alludes to in giving you much of Claire and Jamie’s backstory in the years the two were apart at the same time:

“One of the things we wanted to do was talk about what Claire was doing in those 20 years as well … The way we’ve structured the season allows you to experience both [Jamie and Claire’s lives] at the same time.”

Eventually, you do know that these two characters will find each other, the glorious print shop scene will happen, and eventually that journey to Jamaica is going to happen. While you will see plenty of Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe right away in the series, it may take some time before the two parties actually are seen together. If they were to reunite right away and stay together, then you can argue that effectively this would negate much of the buildup and the drama that was presented in recent trailers. One of the big narrative pushes in the new season is the longing that Jamie and Claire have to get back to each other. Patience will be a virtue, though many members of the Outlander clan out there should be familiar with that after sitting through this current hiatus.
