Arrow season 6: Should Katie Cassidy’s Black Siren be new Big Bad?

Cassidy's Black Siren

In some past Arrow articles, we’ve somewhat danced around the issue of the season 6 Big Bad — therefore, here it feels like it’s time to just come out and ask the question: Should Katie Cassidy’s character of Black Siren be the main villain? Is she the right character to lead the charge in the post-Prometheus era?

There are a number of things that appeal with this idea right away, starting with the fact that it’s just something different. What do the first five Big Bads with Arrow have in common? They are all dudes. Bringing in Black Siren in this role does offer a great deal of benefits in terms of giving Oliver a different sort of fighter, someone with meta-human abilities but is also capable of fighting in her own. She is the only true meta who would occupy that capacity.

Beyond that, there is also such an interesting psychological study to someone being back who is effectively the mirror image of the woman Oliver Queen loved at one point in Laurel Lance. She’ll keep her on his mind and potentially play games with his mind. The same goes for Quentin, Felicity, Diggle, and everyone else who knew her. They are, in one way or another, all at risk of falling victim for whatever sort of traps that she could throw at her on that level.

If there is a negative, it’s that the show hasn’t quite set her up to date as the most formidable villain, given that she was once famously (or infamously) knocked out by a punch in the face from Felicity. She’s also been defeated within an episode or two every time she’s showed up, and for many of them it’s been as a second banana to another villain, whether it be Zoom on The Flash or Prometheus on Arrow. If she is going to rise to the level of villain, she almost has to either prove that she is worthy or accumulate some other further source of power along the way.

The big thing worth pointing out here is that there are an array of different possibilities for what Black Siren could be on Arrow season 6, and that it’s a mistake to automatically assume that she is going to be redeemed just because that is what some out there want. Based on the current evidence out there, the more likely scenario is that she’s going to continue to be a villain and find a way to be a thorn in Oliver’s side.
