When is Orange is the New Black season 6 going to premiere? Even though season 5 hasn’t even hit Netflix yet, there are fans out there wondering when we are going to get more.
After all, the new edition of the Taylor Schilling – Netflix drama is premiering overnight, and there are a small contingent of diehard fans who are probably going to begin their binge watching it within moments of it arriving (hope everyone has their Costco sized tub of cheesy poofs). If anyone does decide to burn straight through them all, they’ll be easily done the entire season before the end of tomorrow and then will be left clamoring for more.
Alas, there is a long wait still for more new episodes, given that the new season will not premiere until 2018. Filming will take place over the coming months, and the show will more than likely face further creative challenges — with one of the biggest ones being the format. Can you go back to doing a season with a more ambiguous time frame after telling this current one over just the span of a few days? It’d be like 24 deciding after the first season to have the title be a reference to 24 days more so than 24 hours.
Based on early reviews, it may be a smart thing for Orange is the New Black to venture back to familiar territory. The early reviews for the new season have been a little more mixed than we’re accustomed to seeing for this show, but it may not be just because of the three day format of the season. Hating on Orange is the New Black seems to be the cool thing for critics to do these days, but in all seriousness this show took a wide departure from what it originally set out to do last season when things got really dark. We still have nightmares about Piper getting tattooed by the Aryans (and it reminded us of that scene from Oz between Schillinger and Beecher). One of the things that separated this show from other prison shows like Oz or Prison Break was that while they were dealing with a serious topic like prison, they were taking a more humorous look at it. Now, a lot of that has disappeared and the masterminds behind the show are all serious drama all the time.
For the time being, there are two great things to pass along about season 6: It’s already happening (Netflix confirmed that a while ago), and that this is not going to be the last season of the show. As a matter of fact, the streaming service already has ordered the show through a season 7, which is pretty incredible given that typically the top-tier dramas are the only ones to get this sort of renewal.
Ultimately, our advice to you leading into the start of the new season is this: Pace yourself. Either watch an episode or two a day until you’re done, or watch them all at once and then watch them a bit slower in a month or so when some details start to fade. This is one of the biggest problems for the people out there who do choose to binge-watch something: Often, all of the content can go in one ear and out the other and with a show this dense, take your time to savor it.
