Gotham season 3 episode 21: Is Jada Pinkett Smith leaving?
This time around, it does appear as though the death of Fish, the show’s notorious original Big Bad, is going to stick. After all, this time both Oswald and us as viewers watched her die right in front of us, and right when she had assembled an army for herself including the likes of Firefly and Victor Fries.
Would it have been great to see Fish stick around in this sort of recurring capacity? Certainly so, but you can argue easily that the writing was on the wall here for a number of different reasons. First and foremost, she’s not a character from the DC Comics world, and she was not beholden to surviving until the age of Batman. Having her die gives the show a feeling that “nobody is safe,” even if some people really are. It gives the show a certain effect in order to lose a person or two along the way.
Meanwhile, there is also the consideration here that Smith is a big name, and because of that there was only so long that the show was going to be able to keep her around as this character. The fact that they got her back as much as they did for season 3 was remarkable in itself, mostly because the original plan here was for the show to be a one-season character and that’s it.
We suppose that in theory, it is possible that Fish could still come back in some capacity given Indian Hill and everything that transpired there in the first place with people coming back. At some point, though, don’t characters need to just die? If you continually bring people back from the grave, then eventually the entire act of doing so starts to lose a little bit of its charm and you stop believing what is actually presented to you on the screen.
