How The Originals season 4 ratings are holding up in summer

Originals season 4 ratings

The Originals season 4 ratings this summer certainly have the potential to suffer, and it’s not hard to understand why. How many viewers are going to be sticking around Friday nights in June in order to watch a television show?

With this in mind, it’s understandable if there are some declines here and there, but you have to give the Joseph Morgan series some credit today — for its first Friday airing since the end of May sweeps, the show fared rather well last night.

In terms of the demo, The Originals drew a 0.3 rating for its episode directed by regular cast member Daniel Gillies. This is basically in line with the show’s average throughout the season — it may be down versus season 3, but it’s also airing at a far more challenging time of year and in this difficult timeslot.

Where things are a little more impressive are in the realm of total viewers, where the show generated a mighty-strong 1.05 million. If this number sticks around in the finals released early next week, this will be the most-watched episode of the show since early April. The Originals has actually improved slightly in total viewers versus season 3, which is definitely unexpected and probably one of the reasons why it is officially returning for a season 5.

In other ratings news…

There isn’t all that much to discuss from last night’s lineup given all of the repeats, but Reign ended up securing in total a 0.2 rating in the demo.

Dateline was actually the winner of the night with a 1.0 rating, while a repeat of Tuesday’s America’s Got Talent premiere was also impressive with a 0.9. Ironically, Shark Tank averaged a 0.8 in its two repeat airings last night, which is not actually all that worse from how it performed when the show was airing during the season.

Ultimately, the best thing to do is just be happy that there are some ratings stories to discuss at the moment; come the end of June, Friday nights will be more or less a wasteland until the fall.
