See first Lucifer season 3 teaser, months before fall premiere
Yet, there may have been a pair of different reasons as to why Fox opted ultimately to go in this direction.
1. There are already episodes in the can – While the teaser (see below) doesn’t exactly give you a big punch in the way of new footage, Fox did have the option of using some of that if they wanted to. Odds are, they will down the line.
The big reason why some of that footage isn’t coming out now is probably due to the fact that Lucifer season 3 is probably not going to start off with the title character back in his element. Remember for a moment or two that the finale ended with him stranded out in the desert and also sporting a pair of wings! To say that this is an unusual way to end the season is a pretty major understatement and then some.
2. Fox already has the fall schedule out there – Based on the timing of network upfronts, most shows don’t actually know for sure when they will be airing in the fall at the time in which their finales air. Even if they do, it’s a gamble to promote that so early in the case that times change. (A good example of that is Chicago Fire, which was originally set to come on Tuesdays before being switched over to Thursdays last-minute.)
In putting the information out there about Lucifer in advance, clearly Fox is banking on the hope that there’s going to be little change for the Tom Ellis series from now until the show premieres … not that there really needs to be any since this is a show that’s clearly found a home on Monday night. We’re not all that happy about the timeslot against Supergirl, but that is a different subject for a different day.
