World of Dance premiere: Diana Pombo, Keone & Mari, Les Twins perform

World of Dance premiere

Tonight, the World of Dance premiere on NBC had a chance to win over viewers following America’s Got Talent. Did it? There was some great dancing, but we do wonder if the show almost takes itself too seriously for an audience that just watched a chicken play the piano.

Anyhow, the ratings tomorrow will let us know if this show ends up being a hit. For now, let’s cycle through some of the dancers who performed over the night.

Supercr3w – The group kicked off the show with great b-boy moves, and also continued the trend of randomly inserting numbers into names.

D’Angelo & Amanda – This was a fun, electric passionate ballroom routine! As Derek Hough pointed out, there were a lot of different styles that were thrown in here in a pretty short period of time.

Les Twins – The two brothers are extremely popular on YouTube already, but there was a surprising amount of emotion in the routine here that we didn’t see coming.

Nxt Lvl – The first group who didn’t get a chance to move on. They were pretty good at what it is they do (clogging), but the reality here is still that this is the sort of thing that we’ve seen over the years on some other shows. It didn’t need to move on.

Keone & Mari – Another pair known for some viral performances online. This was VERY different from what they’re known for in Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” video, but that’s good since it offered up a further dimension of range. They can do a LOT of different things!

Kinjaz – A fun, energetic, and crazy routine that was different than anything else that we’ve seen on the show. This had a really different sort of vibe than anything else this season, but it was fun! They had that infectious energy that you want on a show like this.

Diana Pombo – The final performer tonight, and the only solo performer. She did some powerful, lyrical stuff, but there was also the mere surprise factor of her being able to do things like TOUCH HER FOREHEAD WITH HER FOOT.

All in all, a solid premiere. The talent is top-notch, but the show needs to find a way to have a little more fun. Also, Jenna Dewan-Tatum had almost nothing to do beyond stand with people backstage.
