Call the Midwife season 7: Kate Lamb, Bryony Hannah leaving
In speaking out further on these decisions, the BBC (per the Radio Times) had the following message to pass along:
“We are always sad when actors want to move on to pastures new, as it’s a wrench to let go of such beloved characters, but time and again over the years it has proved hugely exciting to bring new faces and personalities into the mix … As a large ensemble family, comings and goings are part of life in Call the Midwife and we wish Emerald, Kate and Bryony all the luck for their next projects. Our core team are still very much at the heart of series seven and viewers have already taken newer cast members like Nurse Crane and Valerie into their hearts.”
When you think about the direction of the series, none of these exits can be perceived as enormous surprises. In the case of Lamb’s Delia, with Fennell’s Patsy leaving it only makes sense that they go off and be together somewhere away from Poplar and Nonnatus House. This keeps the idea together that they are happy and together.
Meanwhile, when it comes to Sister Mary Cynthia, it was established that her recovery was going to be a long process, and there was no guarantee she would ever get better. This is a character that we could still use an update on, given that the idea of leaving it precisely where the story left off is quite depressing and not something we want to imagine as sticking for good.
Ultimately, the one thing that you do have to remember with this show is that change is just a natural part of it, and it’s certainly withstood many shifts to the narrative and the cast already. Just look at how the show lost Jessica Raine!
