Game of Thrones season 8: Six-episode order confrimed

six-episode count

There is no more reason to wonder about the future of Game of Thrones season 8: A six-episode order has now been officially confirmed, so if you were hoping for more, sorry for your luck.

Per Entertainment Weekly, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are now working on the story for the final season of the show. The news of this small of an episode order should not be much of a surprise to anyone who is a fan of the show, given that this is what they have been planning with Game of Thrones for a long time now. It just hadn’t been confirmed, and there was probably a part in the back of our and many other people’s brains that felt like HBO would try to extend the franchise in some way (Don’t we all just want it to go on forever?). This is, after all, the most successful series in their history and it will finish with a total of 73 episodes once it’s all done. To think, that is more or less three seasons of a CBS crime procedural, except here it’s stretched out over eight seasons. To be fair, these episodes are technically longer, and they also require a LOT more in the way of special effects, but the comparison is still valid.

As for what’s coming in the final season of Game of Thrones, odds are that the show is going to go full-circle and be tied up with a showdown like no other with the humans on one side and the White Walkers on the other. It’s so difficult to think that the battle with the White Walkers will be over at the end of season 7, especially since they were such a huge component in the show’s pilot. With that, doesn’t that have to be something that the series wants to explore further down the line? Also, we are still hoping to see Jon Snow sitting on the iron throne at the end of all this. The Stark family have had the worst luck since the beginning, so we want to see them have a win. Also, we think that Jon would be a king for the people, who will really care about what happens to the kingdoms. We know there are a lot of fans that want to see Daenerys on the throne, and for a while we wanted that too, but the past few seasons for Jon have been really strong and we’ve found ourselves wanting to see him sit in that throne as we’ve watched him grow into a ruler.

New episodes of Game of Thrones this summer are set to premiere this July. The network recently released their first extended trailer, and based on some early estimates, it may be watched more than any trailer in history in the first 24 hours. The network has to be happy about that, especially after their failed “watch this block of ice melt to reveal the premiere date” stunt that was as exciting as watching grass grow.

Speaking of this trailer…

Have you watched it yet? You can check it out at the link here. Enjoy it, and know that we shall be back with MANY MORE impressions about the story ahead over the next few weeks.
